The Peace Corps is an independent U.S. government agency that provides trained Volunteers for countries requesting assistance around the world. The Peace Corps promotes peace and friendship by remaining true to its mission, established in 1961:1. To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.2. To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.3. To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.We currently work with two federal agencies and have two primary projects. Peace Corps/Mexico seeks to provide high quality technical assistance by assigning Volunteers to help strengthen the institutional capacity y of Mexico's national and regional government agencies and local communities to fulfill critical missions and needs in fostering the sustainable development of Mexico through two focus areas: 1) Economic Sustainability through transfer of technology, knowledge and processes, and2) Environmental conservation through management of natural resources and environmental awareness. Peace Corps/Mexico's two primary partners are the National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT) and the Ministry for the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), both national government bodies with regional offices throughout the central states of Mexico. Over 200 Volunteers have served in Mexico in these two programs.
