Performing Arts - Perth, Western Australia, Australia
Our festival actively seeks to include, welcome and value unique contributions of all people; to give everyone a voice and an opportunity to tell their stories. We encourage First Nations peoples, young people, people living with disability, members of LGBTIQ+ community, senior artists and people from culturally diverse backgrounds to be included. This inclusivity approach is central to our festival.Cabaret festivals have existed across the world for decades and in fact have taken place in many other Australian major capital cities for many years, except for Perth – until now. Unlike other performing arts festivals that happen in summer, cabaret festivals are generally held in winter in smaller, more intimate spaces where audiences can, mostly, be seated for a show (or shows), while enjoying accompanying food and beverages. Now is just the right time for Perth to have its first and very own international cabaret festival to enrich Western Australia – socially, culturally and economically. Our Festival will involve artists from diverse cultures, genders and ages to create a rich, multi-cultural, intergenerational celebration.Independent studies confirm that involvement in the arts contributes to better social health and well-being, mental health outcomes, community connection and a sense of belonging and enjoyment. The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a considerable toll on mental health and wellbeing across Australia and the world. Our Festival has been designed to celebrate life and provide opportunities for people to re-connect, re-engage and re-build.One of our key objectives in establishing the timing of PICF in June, in winter, is to position it as the first cabaret festival on the Australian/NZ touring cabaret circuit. Ensuring Perth is the first city on the Australian/NZ cabaret touring circuit offers many exciting opportunities for local and visiting artists and programming.
