One in four (25%) of the population have a patent foramen ovale (PFO), more commonly known as a hole in the heart. Initially thought to be benign, an emerging number of disease and conditions now appear related to the presence of the PFO.There are known associations between stroke, migraine with aura and decompression illness but the true risk to the wider population is not yet understood.
