Philip Williams founded Philip Williams and Associates, Ltd. (PWA) in 1976, a time when river engineers were trained to achieve success by efficiently "plumbing" and draining natural water systems. Phil expanded this single-purpose objective by pioneering new approaches in the field of environmental hydrology. Guided by his disenchantment with engineering projects that devastated or ignored ecological function, Phil promoted a multidisciplinary approach to managing and restoring natural systems in concert with physical and ecological processes. In the last decades, PWA's integration of geomorphology and ecohydraulics within restoration design has become a model for the professional restoration community.
