Physical Synthesis is a design-led startup bringing sound closer to people through patented technology. Based in Brooklyn, New York and Portland, Oregon, we build state-of-the-art musical instruments for musicians and artists while providing hands-on sound solutions for the purpose of business and commercial applications.Our musical instruments are born from Atomic Force Microscopy, a process used in material discovery and other applications requiring very-high-resolution scanning. Through this process, we discovered and then developed powerful ways to control nonlinearities in mechanical systems for the realization of musical instruments and more specifically synthesizers. Our yet-to-be-released acoustic synthesizer, Cicada, will be made available to the public in Q1 2021.In addition to development and engineering of these new musical instruments, we provide companies with cutting-edge sound solutions capable to enhance products and services across a diverse set of industries.
