High energy density energy storage technologies are key to the ambitious societal aspirations of the 21st century of a cleaner environment. Safe electric propulsion for terrestrial or aerial vehicles and energy storage for utilities are key tenets of clean, renewable energy. Lithium ion batteries are the lead contender to fulfill these roles, but current systems cannot fully support these goals. However, a solid-state battery using Piersica's proprietary technology can solve this challenge. Furthermore, it may open the door for a variety of emerging commercial applications. These may include robotics and exoskeletons for assisting the elderly, first responders or the military. Also, a variety of medical uses will arise such as safe power sources for human implants used in the treatment of chronic conditions or malfunctioning organs. Solid state batteries are widely considered to be the next generation of lithium ion battery technology with energy densities above 350 Wh/kg. Piersica seeks to substantially accelerate the path to market of safe, solid state lithium batteries with energy densities of more than 585 Wh/kg (> 2x today's commodity Li ion battery cells). Achieving this goal will require disruption of conventional understanding by bridging proven technologies with several inspirational, but unproven, high impact advances in anodes, separators, cathodes and cell assembly techniques. Building on 15 years of leadership in industrial R&D, Piersica's approach begins with a mature cell design that can yield a competitive deliverable and then working backwards to develop the required processes, cell components, functional materials and related technologies. This concept ensures that the overall effort will be driven by the delivery of a commercial product.
