Pollenize CIC is a social enterprise based out Plymouth, Devon. They use the power of community beekeeping, product design, citizen science, IoT sensors, big data, and environmental DNA techniques to combat pollinator decline.Recent studies across Europe have found insect biomass has declined by up to 75%. This change has been driven by habitat loss, chemical use, and climate change. Pollinator decline threatens the survival of our natural ecosystems and our agricultural capacity.Over the last 3 years Pollenize has developed into an exemplar pollinator conservation project consisting of a network of beehives rigged with sensors and soon to be AI cameras. The focus of the project is to gather environmental intelligence data to research and combat the drivers of insect decline and deliver public led rewilding solutions. The honey bee will be used as a bioindicator of the health of our environment and as a vehicle to green recovery. From the start of our beekeeping journey we could see there was more value in keeping bees than just for their honey, we now see the future role of the beekeepers as scientists and the gatekeepers of bee knowledge.
