POP // CAN // CRIT is an annual, national symposium that looks critically at contemporary architectural topics, within a Canadian context. It bridges academic, professional, and public speakers and audiences, and works to add to the discourses related to the periphery of architecture and the architectural profession.POP // CAN // CRIT held its inaugural event in Ottawa, on October 21, 2016, at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism, Carleton University. The symposium focused on the ‘Current Conditions in Popular Canadian Architecture Criticism' and brought together ten of Canada's leading critical voices. The second edition of POP // CAN // CRIT was held in Toronto at the Design Exchange: Canada's Design Museum, on October 27, 2017. The second symposium looked at the ‘Marketing and Promotion of Architecture in Canada' and resulted in a drastically increased number of attendees, shifted the demographic from largely students and recent graduates to emerging practitioners and business / marketing professionals. POP // CAN // CRIT 2018 will be held at Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Centre at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver on October 19, 2018, and will focus on ‘The Business of Architecture in Canada'. Since 2016, POP // CAN // CRIT has built a national following, through its events, supporters, post-event documents, social media accounts, website and through word-of-mouth promotion. Content produced from the first two events includes a two-part podcast in collaboration with Spacing Radio (POP // CAN // CRIT x Spacing Radio, November + December 2016), 360 video footage (2017), audio recordings (2016, 2017), and is currently in the proposal stages of producing a book through the University of Alberta Press.
