Portland Harbour is unique in the facilities and the protection it has to offer vessels within its safe and sheltered waters. The Harbour's natural and man made features make it a superb choice for all vessels. Not only is the harbour large with 2,000 acres of Inner Harbour and 2,500 acres of Outer Harbour, it is also deep with up to 15 metres (C.D.) depths at anchorages within the Inner Harbour and up to 20 metres (C.D.) depth at anchorages in the Outer Harbour. Portland's Harbour is well protected from the prevailing southerly and south westerly winds, as it shelters behind the Isle of Portland and Chesil Beach, and is circled by an extensive breakwater system which protects it from easterly adverse weather conditions. The ease of access to main shipping lanes from Portland is without parallel on the south coast of England. The Harbour is only 20 nautical miles North from the main English Channel shipping lanes. Vessels have a very short and direct pilotage of approximately 30 minutes to berths. Portland Port has over 2,000 metres of alongside berths; 11.6metres (C.D.) depth of water at the deepest alongside berth; berthing for vessels up to 300m LOA (subject to HM's approval); 6 designated anchorages within the outer harbour; 11 designated anchorages within the inner harbour; a width of 210 metres and depth of over 12.6 metres (C.D) at the entrance of the Harbour meaning that there are no vessel beam, lock or air draft restrictions.
