Poštna banka Slovenije was established by the former Slovenian PTT organisations. The Bank started operations on 1 July 1992, immediately after Poštna hranilnica Beograd had been shut down. It is typical of Poštna banka Slovenije that it operates via the largest and the most extensive network of Post of Slovenia's outlets. All postal outlets in Slovenia (550) or their counters providing cash transaction services are also the Poštna banka Slovenije's counters. The postal outlets have a more favourable (longer) opening hours, including on Saturdays. In cooperation with Pošta Slovenije the Bank has also organised its own independent units. In Ljubljana and Maribor, the Bank has two commercial centres, providing mainly retail services. In Murska Sobota, Celje, Kranj and Koper, it has its representative offices primarily offering services to corporate clients. Since 2004, the Bank has had two owners: Nova Kreditna banka Maribor, holding a 55 stake and Pošta Slovenije with 45 percent of the Bank's shares. By transferring 55 percent of the government shares to Nova Kreditna banka Maribor Poštna banka Slovenije joined the Nova Kreditna banka Maribor's banking group and its larger financial group.
