PressFriends is an all-volunteer, youth-led nonprofit formed by kids for kids in 2008. Our mission is to improve opportunities for elementary school kids in higher need areas, to empower every kid to become a socially responsible leader and mentor, and to create compassion and understanding in youth from diverse backgrounds to strengthen communities.Since 2008, PressFriends have trained 650 student volunteers, 3500 underserved elementary students, printed 115 elementary student newspapers, and printed 50,000 copies of those newspapers. We use peer mentoring and project-based learning to help elementary students improve their writing skills. During the school year, we hold free afterschool and weekend newspaper clubs at Title I elementary schools and at community program sites. In the summer, we hold free summer camp programs with boys & girls clubs and community centers, combining an activity with a writing exercise. Our summer programs include ArtFriends, STEMFriends, SportsFriends, DanceFriends, MusicFriends, TheatreFriends, EcoFriends, BookFriends, MUNFriends and PenPalFriends.
