As I am sure you are aware, the construction industry has the highest rate of suicide in Australia. Each year 169 construction workers die by suicide. According to Mates In Construction, our colleagues are six times more likely to die from suicide than from an accident at work. The industry puts measures in place to try to and reduce the risks, such as councillors and support programs. However:1. Most of them are men - when working in the industry I had more men coming up to me about their problems than their male counterparts, colleagues or even friends in other industries.2. When they eventually seek support - their issues have been compounding for months - if notyears. They have usually been working on site with other men under these conditions.3. We are trying to fix the problem instead of preventing it from ever happening, which takes longer and costs more money/time.4. The men have to make the first move for support which means they have to face the feeling of shame, failure, weak often when already in hardship. I am dedicated to supporting these men before it becomes a problem. Giving them the tools and habits that will make a massive change to their wellbeing, family and work life; and in turn reduce the number of mental health issues we face within construction. I have been working with women for years, but I'm transitioning to working with men, specialising in construction. I realised it's more in line with my mission, to create the biggest impact possible.Let's start being proactive with the mental health of our men instead of reactive!
