Cipher is a code-oriented community in the Peel Region. Our mission is to introduce digital literacy to secondary school students.Cipher is a launching pad into the world of code for high schoolers, not a place where we master anything. Our goal is to have just enough knowledge to hack something magnificent and incredibly rewarding together. We believe that once you get your first taste of how much power you have to create, it's an itch that needs to be scratched -- consistently.Cipher admits high school applicants into our "Circles". Cipher adopts the element of community from school, but breaks the student-teacher hierarchy, opting for peer-to-peer learning. In the Circles, hackers work in tandem weekly to move fast and break things with various technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, frameworks, Python, Ruby, C, through project-based, peer-to-peer learning. Moreover, Cipher hosts workshops and conferences centred on programming and related industries, such as UX + UI best practises, marketing and shipping a product. Cipher brings in industry experts when possible to lead these events.Cipher "Labs" is our community-run development agency. Cipher hackers can compete for development contracts from sources in the community. We host a series of challenges and the team that performs best is granted the contract. The business in need donates a minimum of monetary amount for their project. This provides real world experience to high school students in our Circles allowing them to obtain a glimpse of what a programming job could be like in the future.
