Based on Islamic principles, but open to involvement from people of all faiths, Project Downtown Jacksonville is a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to serving the community of Jacksonville one meal at a time! We meet every Saturday to prepare lunches, and distribute them downtown. We are proudly a chapter of the Project Downtown National organization. Project Downtown's mission is to provide essential life services to homeless and impoverished people in the United States. We have a fundamental belief that every person- regardless of their race, gender, age, ethnicity, religion, criminal record, or life history deserves to have enough quality food, shelter and support to live healthily and become a productive and stable person- enhancing the quality of life in these communities which they call home.Project Downtown began as an informal initiative a decade ago by a few students who were moved by the plight of homeless and needy individuals in downtown Miami. Project Downtown initially was a small-scale organization which passed out 30 sandwiches a week and whatever else they could manage with limited resources. Although the resources were little, the students' compassion was not. What made and continues to distinguish Project Downtown as unique is not the physical support provided, but the emotional. The students considered the people they were serving as friends and human beings- taking time to not only distribute food, but to engage with people. The service that the students provided was also not contingent upon reading a pamphlet or listening to a sermon. To this day, student volunteers have participated in Project Downtown every week for over five years. The program has expanded to over 23 chapters internationally, but continually strives to uphold the same spirit and ideals that the program began with. Our motivation can be found in the Qur'an: "We feed you for the sake of God alone, no reward do we seek, nor thanks." (Holy Qur'an,76:9).
