Project Firefly aims to radically transform the way we approach wildfire containment. In the past 20 years, both the intensity and frequency of wildfires has doubled, yet the technology we use to fight wildfires has hardly changed. Vortex rings are produced by forcing air through a small opening so that it emerges as a fast-moving ball. As it propogates through the surrounding air, it curls back in on itself to create a vortex ring - a ring of air that creates positive and negative pressure effects. When a vortex ring reaches the point of combustion of a fire, it pushes and pulls the fire plasma away from it's fuel base to extinguish it. On larger scales, vortex rings are more feasible for preventing the spread of fire as opposed to completely extinguishing them. Using this technology in conjuction with drones will allow for much more efficient, safe, and effective wildfire containment which is needed now more than ever in human history.
