MissionProject Prevention Coalition's (PPC) mission is to eliminate disparities that disproportionately affect the Hmong community in Merced, CA through awareness, education, research, and advocacy. These disparities include health, education, employment, and other conditions.Who We ArePPC has been a fiscally sponsored organization of the United Way of Merced County since 2010. PPC is a volunteer, community-based health coalition that formally launched in May 2010. PPC is an intergenerational, community-based, health coalition to address various disparities in the Hmong community. The coalition is the first of its kind to build on the experiences and knowledge of both young and old. Most of our coalition members are Hmong but we do have open membership. The purpose of our coalition is to empower our members to become problem solvers for the community. This is also a way for our community to work together to preserve our culture and language that is slowly disappearing. To our knowledge, there is very little or no coalitions like ours in the community. Our Community-Based Participatory Research approach has helped yielded great community support and buy-in. Our Advisory Board is comprised of community members, students, community leaders, and working professionals.Since PPC's inception, we have worked directly with local Community Researcher and current UC Merced Blum Center Executive Director, Stergios Roussos, Ph.D., MPH. He continues to assist and advise PPC with program design, implementation, and evaluation. PPC also works closely with Palee Moua, Cultural and Linguistics Expert and Hmong Community Leader, to provide guidance on developing culturally-sensitive approaches to working with the community and most importantly how to build and foster a relationship with the community.
