According to UNICEF, 1 out of 10 girls skip school due to menstruation. This is not only a single day of school, but approximately 4 to 5 days every month. This is the reality of many girls that reside in rural areas of Ethiopia. There are many other factors that dictate the absence of girls from schools throughout Ethiopia. However, it is undeniable that menstruation is a crucial contributor. This is primarily because they do not have proper sanitary pads to take care of their menstruation, nor do they have the proper education to be able to manage and maintain menstrual hygiene. Therefore, they become self-conscious and embarrassed to go to school or even partake in any other daily activity. Typically, girls in rural areas use grass, paper, cardboard and rags in place of commercial sanitary pads to take care of their period. This causes leaks which leads to sexual harassment from their boy peers or male teachers. In addition, it also causes infections which lead to further complications in their lives. Therefore, most do not have a sustainable method of managing their periods, and repeatedly missing school for this reason causes girls to ultimately leave school entirely. Unfortunately, this makes them vulnerable to early childhood marriage and other activities that prevent them from advancing their lives.ProjectReusable will sew reusable sanitary pads for girls in rural areas of Ethiopia, so that menstruation is not a barrier to their education.We believe that every girl's education matters. Easily preventive impediments and natural processes should not stand in the way of a girl's future and her goals and dreams. Through ProjectReusable, not only do we hope to increase the chances of girls receiving an education, but also strive to empower girls!
