Proyecto Caraya is the first and only primate rehabilitation center in Argentina, dedicated to caring for at-risk monkeys and repatriating them into the wild.Along with black howler monkeys, the reserve also cares for a number of capuchin monkeys. These species are at risk in Argentina, primarily due to recent yellow fever epidemics, the destruction of their natural habitat, and illegal trafficking. The monkeys often arrive at the center malnourished, hypothermic, and frightened. Most of them have lived in very small cages; some do not even know how to climb a tree. This is where Proyecto Caraya comes in. Through a three-stage rehabilitation process, we're teaching monkeys to become monkeys, again.
