Founded in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, People to People International (PTPI) promotes international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural and humanitarian activities. PTPI has reached more than 160 countries with people of all ages participating in our programs.It is a voluntary effort of private citizens promoting international understanding through direct people-to-people contacts. PTPI is dedicated to enhancing cross-cultural communication within and across communities and nations. Tolerance and mutual understanding are central themes. While not a partisan or political institution, PTPI supports the basic values and goals of its founder, President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Realizing the importance of uniting ordinary citizens from different countries to foster understanding and respect, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower launched the President's People to People Program on September 11, 1956 as part of the U.S. Information Agency. The program, which emphasized personal diplomacy and nongovernmental contacts between people, was implemented by an assortment of committees, many of which have become programs that are still carried out today. In 1961, the program was incorporated in the state of Missouri as a not-for-profit organization known as People to People International. President Eisenhower became Chairman of the Board of Trustees and was recognized as the organization's founder. PTPI is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization with World Headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri USA. PTPI's European Office is located in Berlin, Germany. PTPI qualifies for exemption from income tax under the U.S. Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3). The organization is funded by program fees, membership dues, and donations.
