Lift The Smoke. First responders have a focused purpose, to serve their community and they are dedicated to helping citizens during emergencies. These emergencies can span non-life threatening events to terrifying life altering accidents. Over time this constant barrage of exposure to horrific traumatic events can lead to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), moral injury or compassion fatigue just to name a few. There is no escaping. This becomes a mentally choking smoke that clouds their ability to function. Their coping mechanisms to clear the smoke become vitally important to their health and well being. It's difficult to know exactly where to begin when reporting on first responder mental health. As it stands, it would seem there is no official database tracking these incidents. Leaving information outdated and incomplete. Not permitting a true representation of the suffering our first responders are facing. In addition, the impacts of COVID-19 have yet to be accounted for. However, here are four common facts;1. Police officers and firefighters are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty.2. Over 85% of first responders have experienced symptoms related to mental health conditions.3. Depression and PTSD are up to 5 times more common in first responders.4. This is a global problem. It annually costs billions of dollars in rest and recovery. It impacts the lives of our responders, their colleagues and families.
