QGate – the same-named start-up's personal mobile controller – started out as an experiment: living spaces respectively things in our everyday life should be connected to the internet and thus make it possible to communicate with them location-independently via smartphone. The vision of the Internet of Things should also find its way into private households. With QGate a product was developed which combines intelligent technology with modern design and usability. At first sight just an elegant, black adapter plug, QGate connects living spaces and electrical devices to the internet and renders them monitorable and controllable, independently of the user's location. The QGate is operated via the QGate App (for Apple devices, Android devices and web browser) which offers different applications, so-called QApps. The QApps turn QGate into a personal mobile controller. The applications range from simply switching on and off QGate-connected devices via temperature and energy consumption monitoring through to presence simulation with a smartphone. The open app development platform gives app developers the possibility to create their own QApps. However, with QGate the user not only communicates unilaterally with his living spaces or electrical devices, but also receives notifications from them. Depending on the QApp used, the user is informed, for ex- ample, about device failures or temperature fluctuations via SMS, e-mail, Facebook or Twitter notifications.
