The organisation was formerly: Queensland Amateur Athletic Association (founded 1894) Queensland Womens Amateur Athletic Association (founded 1929) The Queensland Amateur Athletic Association was established in 1894 to oversee and manage athletics in Queensland. The Queensland Womens Amateur Athletic Association was started 35 years later in 1929 and then more recently Queensland Athletics was formed in 1983. The association has as its charter the objective of improving the physical, mental and social well-being of the citizens of Queensland through the encouragement, promotion and proper regulation of athletics. Queensland Athletics offers participants access to a complete range of training and competition opportunities, and ensures equity in all aspects of athletics, including competing, coaching, officiating and administration, and the provision of rewards and incentives. Queensland Athletics strives to develop athletes of all abilities by promoting positive attitudes and a healthy lifestyle through family and community involvement in athletic activities. It also attempts to ensure that Queensland has adequate representation at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games and other international and interstate athletics meetings. The Association recognises seven aspects which need careful attention to ensure that equity is achieved and maintained. These are: Gender, Disabilities, Older adults, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, Non English speakers, Employment status and Isolated communities.
