RAFIKI is a non-profit dedicated to improving the overall well-being of youth and children in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. The organization was founded in Norway in 2014 and established its affiliate organization in Tanzania in 2018.Recognizing the lack of competent supervised after-school activities, dropouts in schools, and youth engaging in risky behavior, we thrive to fill the gap by complementing and enhancing the regular school system with holistic after-school programs in a safe and free space.We provide creative-based, yet educational programs including, fine art, dance, music, and yoga that contribute to developing academic and personal growth to lead fulfilling lives. Ultimately, the personal growth will balance the individual in a way that gives them inner confidence, reverence, creativity, and dynamic thinking to become empowered changemakers.We believe expression through art contributes immensely to the healthy growth and development of children. In Tanzania, where we face so many challenges to achieve a basic standard of living, so many of our resources go towards the most urgent needs to preserve life.These interventions are critical, but we believe that we are being short-sighted if we stop at the basic requirements to have life, without looking beyond to ensure that those same lives should have the opportunity to fulfill their potential in this world.We challenge the development mindset in Tanzania and ask: Why should children only have the rights to basic needs? Don't children have the right to play, feel happy, and express themselves no matter their circumstances? We all know that children are our future. We should therefore prepare them to become strong, self-aware and confident individuals who can contribute to their communities and create lasting change over time.
