RAIN combines academic and industrial expertise to develop robotics technology able to solve challenges faced by the nuclear industry.Robotic systems have the potential to transform operations across all areas of the nuclear industry; from improving safety and efficiency in the decommissioning of the UK's legacy nuclear facilities, to making power generation through nuclear fusion a reality. By focusing on delivering technology demonstrations to industry, and deploying robotic technology in active environments, RAIN aims to see the potential of robotic systems realised in the nuclear industry. We are a collaborative hub working from 10 UK based universities and the UK Atomic Energy Authority's RACE facility. Multiple collaborations with industry have led to numerous first-of-a-kind deployments of robotic technology in active environments within the nuclear industry. Remote Inspection and Remote Handling working groups focus our research on real challenges. Guided by industry, these groups have integrated technologies from across RAIN to create solutions able to address highly complex nuclear challenges. To ensure that these technology solutions achieve their potential and deliver benefits to the nuclear industry, a third working group, supported by industry and regulators focuses on nuclear safety cases.
