A community project to renovate a 130-year old Dutch barge into a waterfront arts space within Royal Ramsgate Marina.In August 2020, Ramsgate Arts Barge CIC (a social enterprise not-for-profit organisation founded in Ramsgate, Kent) took legal ownership of a 51-metre Dutch former cargo barge Vriendschap (Dutch for friendship).With the support of the Ramsgate, Thanet, Kent & the wider community, we are aiming to completely renovate, refurbish & repair this impressive vessel into a community waterfront arts space, to be permanently moored alongside Harbour Parade wall, in the heart of Ramsgate's Royal MarinaOur key aim is to provide FREE 'access to the arts' events, programmes & workshops, to all school children under 16 across the Thanet District. We will deliver this programme every Saturday on board the Ramsgate Arts Barge, in addition to the school holiday periods. The project will create Ramsgate's first large multi-faceted arts space, hosting a year-round diverse offering of arts events including visual arts, comedy, theatre, exhibitions, installations, acoustic music, cabaret, film screenings, spoken word, poetry, debates, talks & much more…The Ramsgate Arts Barge project will operate as a social enterprise ‘not-for-profit' organisation, with all profits reinvested back into the project & local community initiatives. The more successful the project is – the greater the community benefits.The Ramsgate Arts Barge will stimulate & boost the local economy by driving increased footfall & tourism into Ramsgate & the Thanet District all year round, creating a positive knock on effect for all local businesses in the surrounding areaThe project will play a crucial role in the town's long-term regeneration plans, creating jobs, work-experience placements & volunteer opportunities for the communityWe will be launching a public fundraising initiative in October 2020 to make this incredible community project possible.... stay tuned!
