Rangárþing eystra or eastern Rangarthing municipality was founded in 2002 when six smaller communities in the area emerged into one. The total population in the area is around 1750 and 850 of them live in the town, Hvolsvöllur. The main industries are agriculture and tourism. "Power and purity" is our focus of the area with great veriaty of beutiful nature sites and agricultural landscapes from coast to mountains. The most known site is propably the volcano Eyjafjallajökull, that erupted in she spring of 2010 and made an impact on the world flight plans. Other sites are for example Þórsmörk, Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and the black beaches. The municipality is a founder of the Katla Geopark Project www.katlageopark.is.
