IntroductionRarely does a music variety television show come along that defies all odds of being a hit television series, especially in the first season. Puttin' on the Hits was such a series. A half hour music reality show where contestants compete head to head lip-syncing the words of a popular recording artist or group, creating the illusion that they are that artist performing in concert. Nothing is spared by the contestants to create the illusion of the real thing, and celebrity judges awarding big cash prizes. Puttin' on the Hits was the very first music variety series in history to capture the number one position in syndication television in its first year. It was also nominated twice for the Daytime Emmy Awards. The series aired 134 episodes in 26 countries and generated over $40 million during its four-year run. The immediate success of the series was the direct result of an ingenious marketing concept and licensing program developed by Mr. Wood in 1981 that generated millions of dollars in free publicity and exposure for the licensees and sponsors making the lip-sync contests a national sensation.
