With the line "No man is an island, entire unto himself," poet John Donne immortalized the interconnectedness of the human community. In his ambitious new painting sequence POPULATION, artist Ray Turner puts a fresh face on this idea with compelling results. An ongoing project, POPULATION began as an interlocking suite of some one hundred fifty portraits of friends, relatives, associates and acquaintances representative of the intangible organism known as "society". Turner's POPULATION "grows" as it travels from one exhibition venue to the next: in each city the exhibition visits, the artist executes portraits of selected citizens, which are added to the overall mix, thus enlarging the collective entity before moving to subsequent sites.Expressionistic in approach, each portrait is fashioned in loose, gestural brush strokes and evocative flourishes of coloration which correspond to a symphony of notes on the emotional register, capturing, in the process, the inner character of sitters with subtlety and surgical precision. Fusing intuitive interpretation with sheer painterly skill, each of Turner's virtuoso portraits is a masterful formulation of "new traditionalist" figurative realism with post-modernist flair.POPULATION is an innovative, iconoclastic, not-to-be-missed presentation which expands the vocabulary of portraiture and stretches convention.
