Civic & Social Organization - Newtown, Connecticut, United States
Everyone deserves access to healthy food but the truth is, too many people suffer from chronic illness due to poor nutrition, and one in ten households in the U.S. don't always know where their next meal is coming from. In a world full of resources, that needs to change. Real Food Share started as a small and dedicated group in Newtown, Connecticut. We found a partner who allowed us to restore a community garden and began delivering fresh produce to our local food pantry. Then we added a second garden, more volunteers... and expanded our delivery into neighboring towns. Next, we networked with local farmers and home growers that had surplus food. We picked it up and delivered thousands of pounds of fresh produce that would otherwise have gone to waste. Now in our third season, we are on track to donate over 30K pounds of food to 8 food pantries in our region. Partnered with 15 farms, 5 farmer's markets, and our own two production gardens, we are already making an impact. The best part is, we're just getting started. We invite you to help in our mission to get as much locally grown food to as many people as possible.
