Recyke y'bike was formed in 2006 with 4 main aims:To develop the skills and improve the quality of life of people experiencing social or economic disadvantage the North East of England. To improve the health of the public by promoting cycling and making it affordable. To advance the education of all ages of the public in the safe use, re-use and maintenance of bicycles. The protection and preservation of the environment for the public benefit by saving bicycles from landfill and promoting bicycle re-use and recycling. Over 2,000 bikes are donated each year. Our team of 14 staff and over 40 volunteers sort the donations and either:Clean and fix them up to be sold in the three shops. Currently 99% of income is derived from bike sales and servicing. The average price of a bike sold is £114. Bikes come with a 1 - 3 month guarantee depending on their price.Clean and fix them up to be given away to local people in need. We work with several partner organisations (Changing Lives, Moving On, West End Refugee Service, Key Enterprise to name a few) who refer clients to us for a free bike. This can be life changing for those stuck in transport poverty as a bike enables them to get to appointments, interviews and meetings without the often prohibitive cost of public transport. We also run FREE Kids Bike Giveaway days where we'll give out 100s of bikes to local children whose parents can't afford to buy them a bike. Ship them to Africa where they are used as part of microfinance programmes; encouraging local people to have a real stake in improving their futures. The bikes needed for this are more robust, basic models, which make it easier for people to maintain and source the spares for them.Recycle them. Bikes which are beyond repair are carefully dismantled and their components recycled.
