Rhodes Music Corporation has commenced the manufacturing and shipping of the iconic Rhodes electro-mechanical keyboard to domestic and international markets from its factory in Long Beach, Calif. Evolving form a piano invented by Harold Rhodes during World War II designed to provide a keyboard that injured serviceman could play while in bed, the Rhodes piano features unique functionality: unlike the action in a conventional piano, where each key causes a corresponding hammer to strike sets of strings, in a Rhodes the hammers strike the tines, instead. The distinctive sound became a favorite of many musicians from the mid-1960s onwards, with a number of notable players embracing the instrument (Joe Zawinul, Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea, Donald Fagen, and Herbie Hancock, to name but a few).
