We manage commissions from start to finish, working with both public and private collections worldwide. It is here in the lush green mountains that the idea for a work is born, taking shape in plaster as the artist designs and creates his models, which are then sent to Carrara, Italy to be carved in stone or cast in bronze. RICHARD ERDMAN STUDIOS, ITALYRichard Erdman has been traveling to Carrara, Italy, a city whose white and grey marble has been used since the time of Ancient Rome, since 1978. While studying abroad in Florence, Erdman found his way to Carrara, where he was surrounded by sculptors and entrenched in a palpable tradition of art making. He has collaborated with artisans Mario Fruendi and Silvio Santini of SGF Scultura for over 35 years, a studio that has since its foundation in 1971, served as a thriving place in which to give life and form to his sculptures. SGF's team of highly skilled artisans have assisted some of the world's most renowned stone sculptors Max Bill, Larry Kirkland, Augstin Cardenas, to name only a few. Erdman has spent half his life working in the town of Carrara and its surrounding quarries, sourcing and carving stone, becoming embedded in the culture and traditions of the craft, and finding inspiration in the merging of two worlds: the ancient one from which stone carving was born and the modern tradition of creating abstract sculpture.
