Westmoreland County's first artist retreat is to be established by nonprofit River Art Works. The goal is to transform the region's art services by offering full retreat services. This project is to include commissary, sleeping quarters, galleries, performance and work space. The region will greatly benefit from this initiative to create jobs by transforming an underutilized area for a use that further promotes tourism, honors its' history and most importantly will facilitate collaborative arts among a diverse group of otherwise solo artists. River Art Works will serve professional art forms and sciences that relate to arts. This includes laser, digital, and holography. Primary locations to be considered are along the Youghiogheny River. The river is connected to the 333 mile Appalachian Bike Trail that connects DC to Pittsburgh. River Art Works has the possibility to utilize passenger trains that run from DC to Chicago, the river, and its' close proximity to Interstate Routes 70, 66, 76, and 119 for access. Various local community activities include festivals, holiday pageantry and parades, Miracle on Main Street night, the Rock-Tober Fest, dinners and health fairs. RIVER ART WORKS goals include usage of tourism to fulfill the need to be sustainable. We also wish to be an asset to the surrounding communities; a magnetic art energy that captivates and lures not only artists from around the world, but entices high disposable income demograph visitors as well as the jobs that follow these patterns of development. River Art Works goal is to share with local citizens and a diverse group of internationally acclaimed, professional, artists to engage people… to shape their own lives and contribute to a holistic growth.
