Public Safety - Sandton, Gauteng, South Africa
The Road Rangers was established in 2010 by four individuals concerned with the safety of cyclists on our roads. The initiative was borne out of necessity due to the high mortality rate of cyclists frequenting the Alberton South area during training rides over weekends. An agreement between the four initial founding members and Helivac EMS was reached, and the Helivac Marshals was established. Helivac Marshals aim was to provide a motorcycle safety marshal service to the training bunches of the South. As time progressed, more and more interest was shown by motorcyclists to join the Helivac Marshals. As the organization grew, the Helivac Marshals established itself in the market and got involved with the cycle races and cycle tours. The Helivac EMS agreement ended late 2011 and it was decided to terminate the name of Helivac Marshals. A new identity was to be established that is not coupled to a specific organization or sponsor. The name Road Rangers, Safety Marshals was accepted. The organization has grown considerably with around 40 Safety Marshals and 10 Support Staff making up the bulk of the VA. The Voluntary Organizations Committee welcomes new candidates who shares in the same visions and mission as that of the Road Rangers. The Road Rangers is not only committed to cycling, but any sport relating to public road events grabs our attention and needs to be attended to from a safety point of view. The Road Rangers is not a road safety initiative although the purpose of the organization is to keep the sport men and women safe while participating in road sporting events. The Road Rangers supports any other government or non-government organizations who share the same concerns, Road Safety.
