The Rockbridge County Sheriff's Office was formed in 1778 and has served Rockbridge County and the City of Lexington for over 242 years.The Sheriff's Office is the primary law enforcement agency for Rockbridge County working closely with the State Police, two city police departments, one college police department, a college security force and a town sergeant. The Sheriff's Office employs a total staff of 43 personnel serving in areas of patrol, investigations, civil process and communications. The Rockbridge County Sheriff's Office serves 607 square miles and a population of 22,400 not including the populations of Lexington and Buena Vista. The combined population reaches 36,300.Rockbridge County is served by Interstates 81, 64 and US Routes 11, 60, 130, and 501. It is bordered by Bath and Alleghany Counties to the west, Augusta and Nelson Counties to the north, and Amherst and Bedford Counties to the east. To its south, it is bordered by Botetourt County.
