MISSION: Mission of the Rocky Mountain Region Disaster Mental Health Institute (a non-profit 501(c)(3) Corp) is promotion, development, & application of practice, research, & training in disaster mental health, Critical Incident Stress Management, traumatology & other emergency response interventions & promotion of community awareness including hazards vulnerability & mitigation research. PURPOSE: Provide a forum for presentation of research results, education, training & consultation in Disaster Mental Health Services (DMHS) & Critical Incident Stress Debriefing/Critical Incident Stress Management (CISD/CISM), advances in delivery of DMHS & CISD/CISM, discussion & sharing of information, ideas & plans, development of a DMHS & CISD/CISM research & service delivery network, presentation of Cont Educ tng for mental health professionals, first responders & chaplains, training for newly recruited DMHS & CISD/CISM volunteers & first responders, & publication of program proceedings & papers as appropriate for dissemination to DMHS & CISD/CISM professionals & first responders locally, regionally & nationally. SIGNIFICANCE: Mental Health Services before, during & after disasters, critical incidents, crises, & terrorist activities have become an integral part of disaster & critical incident preparedness, mitigation, response, & follow-up. DMH Services is a relatively new field which has expanded significantly over the past 10 years. CISD & CISM have been around since the early 1980s. To continue growth & meet identified needs, both require further development & focused research. Research helps identify how MH Services can best be used as well as how relevant changes need to be made in practice. Networking & sharing experiences help develop resources. Long-term goals include training emergency DMH teams & CISM teams to conduct interventions for corporations, states & municipalities in the Rky Mtn region & evaluate their effectiveness in reducing effects of trauma.
