City Government/Municipal Government - New Orleans, LA, US
Roots of Renewal is focused on the reintegration of formerly incarcerated young men, the elimination of blight and decay in the Central City neighborhood of New Orleans, and the provision of affordable housing. We purchase blighted properties in Central City and employ formerly incarcerated young men to renovate those properties under the supervision of licensed and experienced contractors. During our four month construction job training program, they learn various skills in construction including carpentry, drywall, siding, flooring, painting, and more. In addition to learning these valuable job skills, our program participants also participate in professional development classes and receive social services from our partner organizations whenever necessary. At the end of the program, the renovated home is sold at an affordable rate to a first time home buyer from the community, and we place each of our program participants in meaningful long-term employment. Roots of Renewal launched its first program in October of 2015 and graduated its first program participants in January of 2016. Five out of six program participants graduated from the program, and all but one currently have stable, full-time employment. We will welcome our next cohort of program participants in September of 2016.
