The Royal Scottish Geographical Society (RSGS) is an educational charity which promotes an understanding of the natural environment and human societies, and their interactions, making the connections between people, places and the planet, and aiming to inspire positive long-term change. It currently has a membership of 2500 people and growing made up of people from all walks of life, and promoted to anyone interested in the world around them. It runs a range of educational work, operates an educational and visitor centre in Perth, and helps promote geographical understanding through its journal (the Scottish Geographical Journal) and its newsletter (The Geographer). The Society runs a high-profile programme of around 100 public talks annually all over Scotland, supported by 14 local members' groups - probably the best national talks programme in Scotland, and awards a number of high profile medals to some of the most outstanding explorers, scientists, academics, teachers and communicators. It has a large collection of books, maps, images and artefacts collected over the last 130 years, available for display within its headquarters in Perth.
