The chemical industry is an integral part of our everyday lives. Almost 7 billion people living in this world today, depending on the products manufactured in chemical. In this process, they use a variety of unit processes such as oxidation, hydrogenation, hydrogenation, nitration, sulfonation, fermentation, etc. along with various unit operations such as distillation, absorption, adsorption, extraction, crystallization, etc.All these unit processes and operations need equipment of various designs currently totaling to around 400 numbers. In this equipment contacting occurs between gases, liquids and solids. The extent of contacting is expressed in term of mixing, heat and mass transfer, etc. The reliable estimates of these terms are a crucial step in designing the equipment. Empiricism which is primarily based on experience rather than science is more of an art in the domain of few intellectuals, who design equipment based on gut feeling. Empiricism has resulted into substantial overdesigns which need high capital costs for initials investment and high operating costs for running the equipment.The correlations published in literature deviate significantly from experimental values when used for predictions outside the range of experiments on which they were originally devised.
