Happiness is taken as abstract but deep down we all know it is one thing that we all wish to come to. If we ask any parent what is one thing you want your children to be, the answer invariably is happy and well. If happiness was abstract why we say, I am happy. There is no universal agreed definition of happiness. However, we all know it arises from our action in a particular environment that we live in. Toa means it is a process or a path, while Buddha said happiness will be left if we drop the two words, 'I want.' The Princess in Bhutan, HRH Kezang Choden Wangchuck, said, happiness is the highest human quality that is obtained from the wellbeing of a flourishing society. What is human quality? It is to do good, meaning whatever one does, if his/her action does not harm others in any way. In such a situation, we begin to think for others and serve them with love and compassion. So, we can also say our happiness arises from the action we take. Thus happiness is not a goal nor a target that one should imagine and follow. It is a process of our day to day living. Happiness follows us like a shadow if we do not compare ourselves with others, remove our negative emotions out of our minds such as anger/fear, jealousy, pride/ego, greed/excessive desire, and hatred. If we can free our minds from all the negative emotions and nourish our minds with positive emotions, we make our hearts join our hearts and when mind and heart join as one, the body becomes one and we are as good as enlightened. In 1963, the Vietnamese monk, Thich Quang Duc self emulated himself in Saigon as a protest to the President, Ngo Dinh Diem without any movement of pain. Before he lit himself on fire on the street of Saigon, sitting in a meditative position, he said, I respectively plead to the President to take a mind of compassion toward the people of the nation. We can ask a question here, did he happily do it? An enlightened soul to sending a powerful message to the leaders in the world.
