Legal Services - Chicago, Illinois, United States
The American civil justice gap – the difference between those in need of civil legal services and the few that actually receive it – is increasingly large. 86% of the civil legal problems experienced by low-income Americans each year are met with inadequate, or no legal help at all. In large U.S. cities like Chicago, there exist numerous free & low-cost legal service providers; the majority of which, however, only have the resources to address a particular set of legal problems. This can make it difficult for the average consumer to know where they should go for legal help. SAEF (Support, Advocacy, Education for Families) Legal Aid is a 501(c)(3) non-profit startup based out of the University of Chicago. By leveraging technology and human-centered design to help users more accurately diagnose their legal problems, we provide families that are unable to afford a market-rate attorney with streamlined paths towards affordable legal solutions. These include local free legal aid providers, pro bono civil legal services, and low-bono private firms offering limited-scope representation and flat-fee billing geared towards low-income consumers. In collaboration with legal aid attorneys, family law practitioners, family researchers, among other civil justice stakeholders, SAEF has developed a self-help triage and referral questionnaire for Chicagoans with family legal issues, including: child support, legal parentage, child custody and visitation, divorce and separation, and more. On February 28th, 2021, we began private testing of the Beta version of our self-help questionnaire for family law issues in Chicago. Currently developing Open Beta – launch TBD (coming soon!)
