Since 2012, Great Slave Helicopters Ltd. (GSH) has worked in partnership with the Salt River Business Development Corporation, the business arm of the Salt River First Nation, to serve the rotary-wing aviation needs within their traditional territory. This partnership includes the 51% majority owners Fort Smith Métis Council and Salt River First Nations whereby the minority partner, GSH conducts all flight operations on behalf of Fort Smith Métis Council and Salt River First Nations. The Salt River First Nation signed a Treaty Settlement Agreement with the Federal Government in March 2002, which includes a 414 square kilometers settlement area dispersed within and outside of the town of Fort Smith. The traditional territory of the Lutsel K'e Dene includes the land surrounding the eastern half of Great Slave Lake and extends east to the Nunavut border, including much of the Thelon basin. This territory is rich with a variety of mineral resources and hydroelectric energy potential. As such, GSH is ideally positioned to meet the helicopter service needs of companies and public organizations involved in infrastructure planning and development as well as mineral exploration and mining on the traditional lands of the Salt River People. GSH works with the Principles and Stakeholders of this partnership to ensure all helicopter services in terms of supporting logistics, staff and support are met to see successful helicopter operations carried out in the region to support customers in the area. This partnership will help to ensure the same level of local spending will continue to benefit all of these local stakeholders in the future, along with increased benefits to the Township of Fort Smith and the surrounding communities.
