Music - Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
Samba Nova is a 20-30 piece percussion group that plays in the Brazilian samba batucada tradition, of the type you might see and hear at Carnaval. Some of our pieces are very traditional, others blend some new rhythms with these older ones. With the addition of some celtic style fiddle, occasionally highland bagpipes, and our plans for future fusion projects it's a sound totally unique to the area. The band was founded in 1989 by Matthieu Keijser. Matt died in 2006 however the band has thrived and carried on, for four years under the excellent leadership of Carlos Pessoa, and now with a shared musical leadership of Ian Taylor and Alex Nunes, with plans to share musical leadership with other members as is common in community samba groups.
