Since its founding in 1961, San Francisco Cinematheque has become one of the most knowledgeable and respected showcases of experimental film and video in the world. Our intention is to make these works a part of the larger cultural landscape through three main areas of activity: exhibition, publication and education.We represent 50 different programs every year, including:• in-person presentations• contemporary experiments in film and video• historical works from international and American cinema• independent features and documentaries• development of film and video presentations for other national and international showcasesTo further the understanding of the disciplines of film and video art, we also offer:• lectures and public forums• retrospectives• panel discussions• archival services• a publications library• and information services for visiting curators and critics.Complementing our regular calendar of programs and publications, San Francisco Cinematheque continues to produce special projects. Past examples include the 50 program retrospective of AMERICAN 8MM film at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
