Textiles - San Francisco, California, United States
San Francisco School of Needlework and Design (SNAD), is a nonprofit heritage craft education school dedicated to teaching and preserving hand embroidery and related needlework techniques. We have programs for beginners through professional levels, and a Master Skills Certificate program for advanced students wishing to deepen their expertise in a given technique. All of our classes offer individualized instruction so that each student is able to achieve success at each level. Our classes range from simple motifs to more technical and elaborate with options for creating unique individual art pieces as well as contemporary embroideries. We strive to keep embroidery relevant for the 21st Century. Our students come from all walks of life and geographic locations. We host free weekly Stitch Ins where anyone is welcome to come and stitch in our space with others. There are $5 beginner classes for those who want to dip in a toe. Our class prices are kept as reasonable as possible. Most of our intermediate and advanced courses include scholarship priced seats to keep the program affordable to the broadest possible audience.SNAD houses a library of over 2800 books on embroidery and related needlework topics, including history, techniques and multi cultural resources. This library is unique and we are extremely proud to be able to house it and keep it open to the public. SNAD also maintains a collection of embroidered antique and vintage textiles which are used as teaching aids and are displayed in rotation.
