In 2012, the City of Santa Monica collaborated with Santa Monica tech companies to launch a technology workforce development program. The Youth Tech Program's (YTP) goal is to develop the skills necessary for local youth to enter into booming tech industry in Santa Monica. The six-week program beings with a one-week technology rotation to review specialized IT functions within an enterprise environment. During the remaining five weeks, students work together in co-working spaces to develop and launch businesses from concept to investor pitch. Students learn from City instructors, Silicon Beach startups, and established tech firms including FINIEN, DTE Media, Lionsgate Entertainment and the UCLA Anderson School of Management. The program culminates with "Pitch Night" where students pitch their startup ventures to a panel of judges, investors, family members and other attendees.
