It is recognized as an Institute of National Importance under MHRD by the Government of India along with IITs and NITs.School of Management Sciences (SOMS) is an integral part of IIEST, Shibpur. SOMS started its journey as B.E. College School of Management Sciences (BECSOMS) in the year 1999 for Management Education with the commitment of meeting the need of professional managers in the Indian industries.Over a period of 18 years SOMS has emerged as an Institution of excellence in all facets of management education with highly specialized, sophisticated & 21st Century oriented courses and curriculum. The goal of SOMS is to achieve professional growth through holistic management education to shape future leaders for the corporate through intermingling of functional knowledge of Marketing, Finance, Operations, Human Resource Management.Considering the need of the hour the Institute has invited over the sessions, host of leaders and experts from Industry and well known academicians in classrooms and as guest speakers in seminar and workshops.Regular Industrial Tours are also being organized in the vicinity of the university campus to impress upon the students the importance of blending theoretical and classroom knowledge. Organised industrial visits also help the management students to understand core competence and leverages of modernization and selective outsourcing required for an organization to meet the current challenges and for future growth.Such interactions and visits necessarily strengthen academia and industry relationship which paves the way for sustainable development of both sectors.Finally the outgoing batches of SOMS had been mostly placed well in the corporate world and succeeded as entrepreneurs.
