Anyone who works in independent filmmaking is aware of a changing distribution landscape. Independent films can no longer rely on the income of physical sales and the promotional force of a cinema release as the pillar of their business model. Online distribution opens up opportunities – many of them securing rights kept close to the makers – but who's going to sell & market your film? We can't expect directors and producers to pull double duty; it's a job on its own and fundamentally important for the film to lead a successful life once completed. A Producer of Marketing & Distribution – or PMD – designs the M&D strategy for a film, develops its campaign image and makes most of its potential in audience engagement and sales. A PMD works very closely with a film's producer and takes away a lot of their headaches along the way. Together with the filmmaking team, a PMD develops the film's brand, organises marketing materials and takes care of (social) media and publicity. A PMD can be the go to person for distributors, sales agents, local PR agencies, theatres and off/online retailers, making sure any marketing endeavours actually result in views.
