The Seattle Teacher Residency blends classroom apprenticeship with aligned graduate-level course work and a resident/mentor partnership.An affordable pathway to earning teacher certification, all residents receive a generous living stipend while enrolled in the program.In the initial summer quarter, residents take a full coursework load through the University of Washington. During the academic school year, residents are embedded in K-5 classrooms in Title I schools throughout Seattle, learning alongside a mentor teacher. They continue taking coursework one full day and one evening per week, as well as one Saturday per month. During the final summer, residents take coursework that leads to their choice of second endorsement in English Language Learners or Special Education.After completing the 14-month program, graduates earn a Masters in Teaching degree from the University of Washington, a Washington State teaching certificate with dual endorsement in Elementary K-8 and their choice of ELL or SPED, and a teaching position in Seattle Public Schools. Residents commit to teaching in a Title I classroom in Seattle for 5 years post-residency.
