Mental Health Care - Pune, Maharashtra, India
The list of basic necessities has evolved since the last century to include health and education. However, health is still defined in narrow, physiological terms and healthcare often excludes psychological counselling or psychotherapy, which treat mental illnesses and psychological issues such as anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, stress, and others. The ratio of qualified psychologists and counselling professionals to the population of India is scarily inadequate. The stigma around seeking mental healthcare and the financial cost of receiving it further worsen the accessibility of counselling and therapy, especially to the underprivileged. With the belief that the psychologist community needs to take an initiative in bridging these gaps and making therapy accessible for everyone, we established Secret Ingredient Health Foundation (SIHF) to work for the changes we wish for in the world. Having inherited the values and expertise of our parent organization, The Secret Ingredient, SIHF takes a step further onto the community path. We work on a not-for-profit basis, with all populations to promote their psychological and social health and remove the taboo around seeking help. To that end, we research mental healthcare needs of the society. We study, refine and provide arts-based and other kinds of therapy and counselling techniques to address them. We also create and deliver training programs for psychologists and community workers and volunteers to contribute to betterment of the mental healthcare scenario.
